‘I changed my life’s course’ : The impact of the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation fellowship on the career path of a journalist

This study focuses on the fellowship program of Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, which has sent a hundred mid-career journalists from Finland to study abroad at prominent universities. Based on two surveys, one on the fellows (n = 45) and one on a control group (n = 52), the article discusses the impact the fellowship education has on the journalists and their careers. The surveys are complemented with in-depth interviews of 10 fellow journalists. Between a ‘student abroad’ and ‘being from Latvia’: inequalities of access, prestige, and foreign-earned cultural capital

This paper visualises tertiary-level students who study abroad as simultaneously both international students and members of an emerging diaspora. Coming from a country (Latvia) which is peripheral and relatively poor by European standards, students go abroad for multiple reasons not necessarily directly connected with study (e.g. family reasons, labour migration); yet their evolving diasporic status is instrumentalised by the Latvian government which wants them to return and contribute to the country’s development. Starptautisko studentu uzņemšana Latvijas Universitātē pēdējās desmitgadēs ir ievērojami paplašinājusies. Šajā pētījumā tika pētīta starptautisko studentu pieredze akadēmiskajā un sociokulturālajā vidē. Kvalitatīvās intervijas rezultāti atklāja, ka ārvalstu studenti risina akadēmiskās problēmas, sociālo izolāciju, kā arī finansiālās problēmas un pielāgošanos kultūrai. Akadēmiskās problēmas ietvēra saziņu ar universitates mācībspēkiem, kursa biedriem un citu personālu. Studenti regulāri saskārās ar sociālo izolāciju, iesaistoties dažādās grupas aktivitātēs. Šī interpretatīvās fenomenoloģijas analīzes (IPA) pētījuma mērķis ir atklāt to ārvalstu studentu pieredzi, kuri COVID-19 pandēmijas laikā mācījās ārzemēs. Šis pētījums pēta, kādu jēgu ārvalstu studenti piešķir savai pieredzei un uztverei, studējot ārzemēs. Šajā pētījumā ārvalstu studenti tiek definēti kā studenti, kuri vismaz vienu semestri studē universitātē valstī, kas nav viņu mītnes valsts. Aptaujājot ārvalstu studentus, kuri studējuši trīs dažādās Eiropas universitātēs, autore apraksta starptautiskās studentu pieredzes fenomenu globālās krīzes laikā.
